Transketolase

Transketolase

Transketolase is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the non-oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Transketolase is critical for energy transduction and for generating ribose for nucleic acid synthesis. Transketolase can convert ribulose 5-phosphate back into glucose 6-phosphate to generate more NADPH, and the reaction is thiamine-dependent. Transketolase has three isomer: TKT, TKTL1 and TKTL2. TKT is expressed in all investigated organisms, and is up-regulated in multiple cancer types[1][2].
