Enzymes can be classified systematically according to the difference between reaction and substrate specificity, and the mechanism of action. Translocases (EC 7.x.x.x) is a new Enzyme Classification (EC) class that is added to describe those enzymes catalyzing the movement of ions or molecules across membranes or their separation within membranes. Some enzymes that had previously been classified in other classes, such as EC 3.6.3.-, which are involved the hydrolysis of ATP, are included in the EC 7 class nowadays. The subclasses EC 7.1 to EC 7.6 designate the types of ion or molecule translocated (e.g., catalyzingthe translocation of hydrons, inorganic cations and their chelates, inorganic anions, amino acids and peptides, carbohydrates. and their derivatives, other compounds linked to the hydrolysis of a nucleoside triphosphate) .
