Ion Exchange Chromatography

Definition:

Ion Exchange Chromatography is a separation technique based on the differences in net charge of molecules. Proteins or other charged biomolecules are adsorbed onto a chromatographic medium with an opposite charge based on their net charge at a specific pH. By altering the ion strength or pH of the elution buffer, the molecules adsorbed on the column can be gradually eluted. This method is widely used in protein purification, complex separation, and the charge analysis of biomolecules.
