Background

Growth arrest specific protein 6 (GAS6) is a vitamin K-dependent protein that has a high degree of structural homology with natural anticoagulant S, having the same modular composition and 40% sequence homology. GAS6 contains an NH2 terminal Gla domain as well as four EGF-like repeat sequences and tandem globular domains. GAS6 is a ligand for the tyrosine-protein kinase receptors AXL, TYRO3, and MER, whose signaling is involved in cell growth and survival, cell adhesion, and cell migration. GAS6/AXL signaling plays a role in a variety of processes, such as the survival of endothelial cells during acidification, by preventing apoptosis, optimal cytokine signaling during human natural killer cell development, liver regeneration, survival and migration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons, platelet activation or regulation of thrombotic response[1][2][3][4][5].
