During the fusion process, the coiled coil regions, characterized by heptad repeats, form a trimer-of-hairpins structure. This arrangement positions the fusion peptide in close proximity to the C-terminal region of the ectodomain, a configuration believed to drive the apposition and subsequent fusion of viral and target cell membranes.
