Phosphodiesterase (PDE) is an enzyme that breaks phosphodiester bonds, usually ring nucleotide phosphodiesterase. Phosphodiesterases consist of a group of enzymes that degrade the phosphodiester bonds in the second messenger molecule cAMP and cGMP. They regulate the localization, duration, and amplitude of cyclic nucleotide signals within subcellular domains. PDE inhibitors can reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, stimulate neuroplasticity, and improve symptoms of mental disorders in preclinical models by activating the CAMP-PGKA-CREB and cGMP-PKG pathways.
