Background

Syndecan-1/CD138 Protein is a cell surface proteoglycan characterized by the presence of both heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, establishing a link between the cytoskeleton and the interstitial matrix. It plays a role in regulating exosome biogenesis in collaboration with SDCBP and PDCD6IP. Moreover, Syndecan-1/CD138 has the capacity to induce its own expression in dental mesenchymal cells and neighboring dental epithelial cells through an MSX1-mediated pathway. It interacts with CDCP1 and associates with TIAM1 via its C-terminus and the PDZ domain of TIAM1. Additionally, Syndecan-1/CD138 engages in an interaction with Midkine (MDK)[1][2][3].
