Description

Selenomethionine is a naturally occurring amino acid containing selenium that has oral activity and is a common natural food source. Selenomethionine has antitumor activity[1][2][3].

In Vitro

Selenomethionine (50 μM, 12 h) decreases the hatchability and glutathione consumption of Japanese rice embryos, but does not affect selenium accumulation[1].
Selenomethionine (45-135 μM, 24 h) inhibits the growth of MCF-7/S breast cancer, DU-145 prostate cancer cells and UAC-375 melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner[2].
Selenomethionine (25-500 μM, 24 h) inhibits TBHP-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial division by activating the Nrf2 pathway, thereby inhibiting the apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) and improving intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD)[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Western Blot Analysis[3]

Cell Line: NPCs
Concentration: 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 300, and 500 μM
Incubation Time: 24 h
Result: Downregulated of cleaved-caspase 9, cleaved-caspase 3 and upregulated of Bax and Bcl-2.
Reduced the expression levels of DRP1, MFF, and Fis1, upregulated the expression levels of OPA1, Mfn1, and Mfn2.
In Vivo

Selenomethionine (2 mg/kg/day, gavage for 4 weeks) can improve the degenerative performance in the acupuncturally-induced rat IDD model[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: IDD Rat Model[3]
Dosage: 2mg/kg/day
Administration: i.g
Result: Reduced NP size, collapsed disc height, significant loss of cells, and dense ECM.
Decreased the levels of Nrf2 and collagen II amd increased the expression level of MMP13.

In Vivo:

For the following dissolution methods, please prepare the working solution directly. It is recommended to prepare fresh solutions and use them promptly within a short period of time.
The percentages shown for the solvents indicate their volumetric ratio in the final prepared solution. If precipitation or phase separation occurs during preparation, heat and/or sonication can be used to aid dissolution.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
