Interleukin 17 (IL-17) is a family of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It consists of IL17A, IL17B, IL17C, IL17D, IL17E and IL17F. IL-17 is mainly produced by T helper 17 (Th17) cells. IL-17 can induce the release of certain chemokines (CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL5, CXCL8, CXCL10), cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, G-CSF, GM-CSF), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) (MMP1, MMP3, MMP9 and MMP13) and antimicrobial peptides (β-defensin and some S100 proteins) from mesenchymal and myeloid cells. IL-17 can also activate the nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway. IL-17 is involved in various diseases such as autoimmune diseases, infection and cancer[1].
